Application
The ICMcompact Partial Discharge Detector is used
for quality assurance and quality control tests of low and high voltage insulation. With some restrictions, the instrument can be used in field as well.
Features
Integrated LCD Screen -- Displays an analog meter
as well as an oscilloscope trace showing the test voltage synchronous
sine wave and partial discharge pulses. No additional oscilloscope is needed.
Pushbutton Menus -- ICMcompact settings and calibration are done by pushbutton menus displayed on the LCD screen. The settings remain stored after the instrument is turned off.
Automatic Scale Factors -- Automatically calibrates
and changes gain ranges. The ICMcompact also contains an autoscale
algorithm that adjusts the scale automatically.
Unique Preamplifiers -- RPA1 remote controlled and
remote supplied preamplifiers and cable drivers are standard with
the ICMcompact.
The control and power supply of the RPA1 units is
done by the acquisition unit through a standard coaxial cable
which also transmits the partial discharge signal. The preamps
do not use batteries or connections that may require maintenance
or extra attention.

Additional Features
Oscilloscope Display
The integrated oscilloscope display offes direct analysis of the phase-resolved appearance of the partial discharge activity. Thus, an additional scope is not needed.
The internal line or external phase reference allows
line synchronous measurements, tests with resonant power supplies,
and tests with higher frequencies (transformers, aircraft power
supplies, etc.)
The adjustable phase shift allows a correct display
of the partial discharge pattern when using line trigger.
Variety of Display Modes:
In the 'Hold' mode, PD pulses are stored on the LCD screen as a point at the phase angle and amplitude of its
occurrence, providing a digitally recorded monochrome PD pattern.
In 'Sine' or 'Normal' mode, PD pulses are shown superimposed on a sine wave, or displayed on a separate trace together with a test voltage synchronous sine wave.
Autoranging Gain
Gain can either be set manually or automatically.
In the Auto-Mode, the best gain range is determined automatically
by the acquisition unit. In both modes the ICMcompact computes
the proper full scale values.
X-time-Plotter Output
The apparent charge value is available on the rear
panel for recording (BNC-connector).
lnterference Suppression
An adjustable lower discrimination level allows the
suppression of small PD signals. This enhances the quality of
the test results by raising the PD detection threshold above the
background noise level.
A pair of phase windows with adjustable width can be freely moved over the phase. This allows an elimination of phase stable disturbances which are often found close to voltage
zeroes.
The optional noise gating function offers elimination of disturbances by triggering to the noise signal picked up by an antenna or a clamp-on HF current transformer, such as the CT100, for instance. Both automatic and manual setup of this efficient noise elimination is provided.
Further disturbance elimination can be performed by selecting the proper frequency range, using Power Diagnostix's differential coupling impedances or using ICMcompact-compatible 'RPA2 preamplifters'.
Also, an electronic bridge circuit (AB1) and optical connections to the coupling impedances (RPA4) are available for enhanced cable testing or PD tests on well-grounded equipment.
RPA1 Pre-Amplifier
The standard preamplifier RPA1 offers very low noise and highest sensitivity. Further, the RPA1 serves as impedance converter and line driver. Thus, the power separation filter or coupling impedance is not loaded by the signal cable's capacitance and connecting cables as long as 200m can be used without signal deteroriation or loss of sensitivity.
Additinally, this technique provides extra safety margins in case of breakdowns and flashovers. The RPA1s are proven units which are performing reliably in more than 400 laboratory and field applications throughout the world. |
